The last hours of 2014 are ticking by. I’m in the USA and I just played Settlers of Catan with Ethan and Hannah. I won the game with 3 Cities, 1 Settlement, the largest Army and a victory point. This morning we left our house at 7am to skate in Milwaukee. This is what I do on my day before New Year. In 8 hours it will be 2015 here. In 1 hour it will be 2015 back home.

My year started off with the National championship. Here  I got Dutch champion together with my relay team (with: Aafke Soet, Suzanne Schulting and Esmeralda Wannink) from Shorttrack Club Thialf. Overall I got 5th. My brother also won the relay with his team.

NK shorttrack 2014

On January 16th, exactly a week after my 17th birthday, I passed my drivers test. So I got my license. In the Netherlands you can start driving lessons when you’re 16,5. Then you can get your license when you are 17. The first year you’re only allowed to drive with your ‘coaches’. So I could drive with my parents. When I get 18 (January 9 2015) I can drive alone. But because I’m in The States this year and my exchange organization (AFS) doesn’t allow me to drive I have to wait until I’m back in The Netherlands (beginning of July).

Last year I was in my final year of the HAVO at my highschool in The Netherlands. We have different levels in the Netherlands. It is hard to explain but I will add an image which will hopefully explain the Dutch school system a little. But I graduated from the level I was on. Now I knew I passed school my parents allowed me to go on my exchange year. I’m not sure if they allowed me if I didn’t pass it. All my grades are really good. There was one which I could do better. You have the chance to do one of the exams again (if you graduated or not), I did this and I got my grade up 2 whole points overall. 🙂

In the beginning of the year I had a lot of preparations for my exchange year in the USA. Filling out all the papers, waiting for a hostfamily, thinking which things I would take and working a lot during the summer break to get more money. When I heard that I had my family in Oak Brook, Illinois I was really excited and I couldn’t wait to meet them!

During the summer I also stayed training for shorttrack a lot. I’m sad I have to miss my team there for a year. But here in the USA I have an awesome team too. I got information about the day that I left in the beginning of the summer. It got closer and closer and I had to say goodbye to family and friends. Which was sad.. I’ve had an goodbye party where a lot of people came. I was happy most of the people where able to come! 🙂

A week before I left I really started packing my stuff. I had a lot of stuff to take, my skating stuff (includes 3 pair of skates), clothes, and some gifts for the family. I already sent some stuff  by mail. But I still had a lot of stuff.
The evening before I left I went with my parents and brother to the Otterskooi. This is a restaurant in Giethoorn. I drove, this was the last evening I was able to drive. After we went to my grandparents to say goodbye. This was hard, that was the first moment I realized I would really be gone for almost a year. Tineke, Eleni and Lotte (friends of me) where at my home when we came home. It was really nice to spend the evening with them before departure. I didn’t expect this, it was a surprise. The next morning they brought me together with my parents and Sanne (another friend) to the airport.

Here my adventure really started!

After a night in a hotel and some orientations the first day where I already met a lot of other exchange students (who are awesome!) my hostmom, hostsister and younger hostbrother picked me up. It was really nice to meet them!  Later I met the others of the family. My hostfamily exists of a dad, mom, 3 sisters and 4 brothers.

I’m going to be an American here. It is fun to see that the schoolsystem is different. In school here you have sport teams and here I joined the Cross Country and the Track. I’ve met a lot of new people here and they are all really nice.

This year I had an American Halloween and I went trick or treating. I had Thanksgiving where we came together with the family. I introduced Sinterklaas to my family and I had a real American Christmas with a lot of presents and really nice lights in the streets.

I’ve also done really nice trips here. I went to Wichita, Kansas for a shorttrack meet where I got 3rd. I went to Holland, Michigan to see at a Cross Country meet of Hannah and to see family and the city there. I went to Minneapolis for a longtrack meet outside. Here we also went to Mall of America where I meet up with an AFS returnee from last year. And I went to St. Louis for the Hot Chocolate run. Here we went also up in to the Arch.

I really liked all the things I experienced this year. It is awesome to live a year abroad and if people ask me if they should do a year abroad. DO IT!! This is a once in a lifetime experience and I love it!! If you want to see what I exactly did here in the USA you can read my other blogs. 🙂

My dad is going to bike up to the Alpe D’huzes next year. This is to get money for cancer research. He is still looking for people who can donate. I hope you can maybe help him. For more information about that click here or look at www.climb4hope.nl.

5 minutes left until new year in the Netherlands. Have a great 2015 everyone!! I’m sure this year will bring us a lot of great things. I will see you guys in July!! 😀

Christmas

Jaayy, I’ve time for a blog again!! 🙂
It is December 27 and that means Christmas time is over. It was amazing to experience the American Christmas. But let’s start first where I ended last time in St. Louis.

So last time I wrote my blog in St. Louis. I went there with my hostmom to do the Hot Chocolate run. This run was also in Chicago. But we missed that one. I really liked the jacket that you could get with running the run. So we decided to go to St. Louis and then I could see some stuff there too. 🙂
Sunday morning December 14th we woke up early to go to the run. We walked to the start and waited until we could start. We ran easy because we were both injured. Becky hurt her heel and my ankle hurt. We ran the 5k in a little less than 30 minutes. After we ran we got Hot Chocolate (of course) and some other stuff with chocolate. My parents (in the Netherlands) followed us running online.

I tracked too where we ran: http://runkeeper.com/user/ShorttrackGirl/activity/482653351?&activityList=false&tripIdBase36=7zcxpj

After the run my hostmom and I went back to the hotel. We took a quick shower and packed our stuff. After that we went to the Arch. This is like the thing you have to go when you are in St. Louis. It is a kind of bow. And you could go up in it. We did this. Up there you had an amazing sight on St. Louis. My mom went to St. Louis too during her exchange year in Texas in 1985/1986. I asked her to send some pictures and I tried to make the same +-30 years later.
I had a lot of fun in St. Louis. The only bad part was that I felt my ankle (the pain didn’t go away)..

The next week at school I went to ‘the trainer’ so she could check my ankle. Because it did still hurt. Because I’m in the track team of school I was able to go there. She concluded my ankle has Tendonitis. So now I have to ice it often and I have to do some exercises.

Thursday I had my first Christmas party from the skating. We went after practice (which I didn’t do because of my ankle) to a pizza place. I taught some of my team the cardgame ‘stressen’. They are getting good in it. They call the game: cards don’t care. Just because I said ‘It doesn’t care’ for a rule instead of ‘it doesn’t matter’. But now I know how to say it good. 😉

Friday was my second Christmas party at Nicole’s. We had hot chocolate, did a scarf exchange and watched elf. Hannah and I had to leave a little earlier because Hannah had to get up early for a skating meet the next day. So we only saw the half of the movie. My winter break also started on Friday.

IMG_20141219_201138060

Saturday was my third Christmas party (yes, I had a lot of Christmas parties haha). This time it was of the family on the Bosman side (so the side of my hostdad). We all came together and ate. We also watched the Blackhawks game. Unfortunately they lost.. But it was really close.
*note: The Blackhawks is the (ice)hockey team of Chicago. They’re awesome!! GO BLACKHAWKS!!

I went skating in Chicago with other Exchange students on Monday. It was a lot of fun. I brought my own hockeyskates. So I didn’t have to wait to rent skates. I took a lot of pictures. It was rainy that day so I got wet. Luckily it wasn’t that cold. I went back with Eviny (Brazil) in the train. She lives really close to me and I didn’t know that. But now I know. 🙂

When the train arrived my hostdad did bring me to a laser game place for the birthday party of Jan-Eric. I came in halfway the 2nd game and I got last with 1 point that game. I played the 3rd (and last) game really good. I got 4th (out of 13?) with somewhere in the 400 points. I didn’t expect I would finish that high. It was fun to do. After that we went home. I was tired after a long day full with fun stuff.

It was Christmas Eve on Wednesday. We wrapped the last presents and put them under the tree. There was a big difference between the wrapping of me and my hostdad. I think I wrapped a little bit better. The present I wrapped is left and the one my hostdad did is on the right side.

IMG_20141224_175952346 (1)

In the evening we started the movie ‘It’s a wonderful life’. My hostfamily watches this every year on Christmas eve. Half way we had to pause the movie so we could pick up Tessa from the airport. This is one of my hostsisters. She lives in California and she came home for the break. It was nice that I could finally meet her!! When we came back we finished the movie. I think it is a nice tradition to do. So maybe I will watch it next year again! 🙂

And then it was Thursday, the day of CHRISTMAS!! In the morning I woke up because I heard people laughing and talking. I dressed and went sitting with the rest of the family. First we opened our stockings. This a big sock with small presents in it. After that my younger hostbrother Micah got the presents from under the tree. There were a lot of presents. It was really fun. In the Netherlands Christmas isn’t that big. With my family we might have some small presents but not as many as here.  I got an awesome onesie (which looks like a polar bear), a sportshoodie, an US speedskating t-shirt, a hat with I <3 USA, gloves with on the right hand GO and on the left hand USA and some other stuff.

After that we tried to redo a picture of the family they made in 2001. I think the new picture (made by me) is pretty good. 🙂
Then we went walking at Graue Mill with the whole family. Ponce could go with us too. It was a while ago that he went somewhere else. So he was really excited. At Graue Mill we made some family pictures.

When we came back we skyped with my parents. It was fun to nice to talk with them and to ‘see’ them again. Here a picture my dad made during the skype:

My class ring came also back in the post. I sent it back to the factory because the paint wasn’t 100% good. Now it is good and I’m happy I sent it back. I got also a hat made by my hostmom. It is really colorful. So now I have enough hats. I lost my hat that I did bring from the Netherlands before. So I didn’t have a hat.
In the evening we went walking in the neighborhood. Me in my polar bear onesie, hot chocolate jacket, my colorful hat and the colorful running shoes I bought here and my camera haha. I won’t be surprised if people think I’m crazy. I made some pictures with the nice Christmas lights. Here are some pictures.

In the evening we watched old home movies. There were a lot of really funny parts. Like my hostbrother who just learned how to walk getting a (toy) car for his first birthday. And he drove against everything. Haha

Yesterday I went up to Milwaukee again for practice. It was an easy practice. I have a lot of times that I get dizzy and luckily I didn’t had that. Of course I had something else. My blade got loose so I had to go off the ice to make it again. After that I went on the ice again to finish the practice.
When we got home Hannah and I made some ‘knieperties’. This is like a thin waffle. In the Netherlands we make this every year around Christmas and new year. The machine didn’t work like it has to. So we didn’t make all. It took a long time.

Today I should go to Milwaukee for practice. But when my alarm went off I was really tired so I decided to stay home. This was a good choice. I slept for 3 more hours. I don’t know sure what the plans are for next weeks. I know Tuesday we will have another family party (from my hostmom her side) and I will probably go to Milwaukee. Monday Eviny and maybe Ana (both from Brazil) will come over. I’m planning to go in spring break to Hawaii. So I’m really looking forward to that.

Have a great new year everyone!!

*5 days until 2015
*13 days until my birthday
*91 days until Hawaii
*+- 184 days left in the USA

Heeyy everyone!!

I’m here already for 4 months. I have a lot of things to tell. So be ready for a long story. I wanted to update my blog earlier, but I didn’t have time to update it…

‘Think Happy’ at Mall of America

The USA is preparing for Christmas right now. The houses gets lights and a Christmas tree, and the radio stations start to have Christmas music, or they even change into a Christmas station. We didn’t have a lot of time so our Christmas tree is half done and we don’t have lights outside yet. Right now I’m on my way to St. Louis, Missouri so I have finally time to write my blog. One more week of school and then the winter break starts. Then I will have some more time I think! 🙂

So let’s start with this blog at Wednesday November 26th. Hannah and I went with Nicole and her sister to Mockingjay! 🙂 Hannah and I went right after practice to the cinema where we meet up with Nicole and her sister. Unfortunately I lost my hat at the cinema 🙁 (I don’t know why I took it..). I enjoyed the movie a lot. Now we have to wait for the next one again. Haha
Since I’ve been here I’ve been more times to the movie theater than I’ve been last year in the Netherlands. I went to three movies until now (in 4 months) and we’re still planning on going to the third Hobbit movie and probably Unbroken.

Then Thursday it was Thanksgiving day! This day we went to the parents of my hostmom to come together with some family. We ate turkey (of course), smashed potato, corn, stuffing and more. I don’t remember all the food exactly anymore. After we ate we just walked around in the neighborhood with some of the family. We ended up at a playground. Luke, Noah, Leah, Hannah, Micah and I stayed there and the others walked further. After a while at the playground we went back. (It was a fun playground haha)
My hostgrandparents were a few years ago in the Netherlands and showed me pictures of their visit. Here I recognized the church of the (small) town where I live. They were like 1 mile (1,6 km) from my house. I didn’t expect that, so it was fun to know they were in my town.

Friday was BLACK Friday. This means a lot of stores have big sales. At some stores it already started at Thursday so we went after our visit at the family to a store to get yarn. My hostmom will make slippers for me with that. 🙂 When we got home I was tired and I was ready to go to bed. But Leah and a friend went black Friday shopping and they asked if Hannah and I wanted to come. Of course I wanted to come. It is a new experience. So we went shopping. I didn’t buy much. Only one movie with Hannah because I said she had to see that movie (Pitch perfect, now we can go to the movie theater for the second one too :)) After getting late home we went fast to bed.
*fun fact: If you ask for slippers in The Netherlands you will get flip-flops. The translation is different. I first thought about flip-flops too instead of the slippers they mean here (pantoffels/sloffen).

IMG_20141128_080043750
My hostmom is making slippers for me 🙂

Friday morning we had our alarm early and we went to world market. The first 100 visitors got a free Downtown Abby mug and we were one of the 10 first visitors so we got a mug too. I did buy 2 scarves at world market. I still needed a scarf because I didn’t take it with me from The Netherlands. The second scarf was for free. So now I have two! 🙂
After we came home Hannah and I watched the movie we just bought. Some friends of skating would come over but they came later than we expected. When they were there we played some games on the Wii and we went to Oak Brook Mall. I didn’t buy anything (even they had the awesome sales). After that we went to a pet store to get a mouse to feed to the snake (which was still at my room). The pet store didn’t have the mice I needed so we had to go to another store. Brandon and Ethan already went back to our house and Hannah, Michael, Jan-Eric and I went to the other pet store. Here they also had Christmas dog cookies which smelled like ginger cookies. So we bought them to give to Brandon and Ethan. Then we went to the store to get other cookies and then we went back. We put the Christmas dog cookies in the cookie box and got a lot of the real cookies out. Brandon picked a real cookie but Ethan picked the dog treat. We laughed a lot. Haha

Saturday we got out of bed early again because we had time trials for skating in Milwaukee. I skated 2 personal bests. On the 500 meter and on the 1000 meter. I didn’t skate long track meets in 3 years so it wasn’t really a surprise. After the time trials we went to a mall somewhere in Wisconsin. Jan-Eric drove with us so he came with us to the mall. Again, I didn’t buy a lot. I think I don’t need a lot of stuff now and I prefer save money then.
We bought our Christmas tree on Sunday. On Sunday we didn’t do much besides buying the tree I think. I have a little notebook which I use to write stuff in that I do so I can put it in my blog. But I forgot to take it. So I can’t check now.. I probably made some homework that day because school started Monday again after my week off.

This will be really long.. I didn’t tell about Minnesota and Sinterklaas yet. 😉 I hope you (still) enjoy reading this. 🙂

The school week was pretty normal. The only new thing is that I started doing track after school. So now I go after school to track practice and then I go home to do skating practice (one of the reasons why I don’t have a lot of time).  I only went to track practice twice that week. Wednesday I went up to Milwaukee for skating practice and Thursday we left to Minnesota! 🙂 We did also bring the snake back on Thursday. I watched him during Thanksgiving break, I wrote more about the snake in my last blog.

So Thursday after school we left to Minnesota. I came home and I had like 45 minutes time to pack all my stuff. We left a little later than planned. But the trip to Minnesota was good. We went to Minnesota to do a skating meet (AM-cup longtrack). It was on an outside track and it was really nice. The first racing day was on Friday. We could sleep in because it started later. My hostmom woke Hannah and me up with a Sinterklaas song. Because it was December 5th. My family here knows the song ‘Sinterklaas kapoentje’. They learned at school when they were younger. On our first racing day we did the 500 meters and a 10 lap mass start. My 500 meters was pretty good. I wasn’t close to my personal best. But it is on an outside track, times are normally slower there. I started the mass start pretty good. But after 6 laps I got behind and my legs felt really bad. I only speed up with 2 laps to go so the others won’t pass me again. If I was a lap behind I wasn’t allowed to finish, and I wanted to finish. So with one lap to go I slowed down a little again and I did the last lap easy. After the racing day we went to Dano her house for a pasta party. Here was also someone who went with AFS to Switserland a while ago. It was pretty cool to meet him. I wore my AFS sweater, that’s why we started talking about AFS. 🙂 The world is small!!
Saturday was the second race day out of three. We had the 1000m and the 3k. The first 600 meters went really good with the 1000 meter. The last lap was really bad. I decided not to do the 3k because my legs were tired and I also had the 1500 meters the next day. I just made some pictures of races. After Hannah was done with the 3k we went to the hotel to change and shower real quick and then we went to Mall of America. The Mall was huge!! I think I only saw like 20% of the mall and it looked like a big part. In the middle of the Mall is an amusement park with rollercoasters. I didn’t go in a rollercoaster because I tough it could be bad for the next racing day. I also meet up with Mikey. He went last year with AFS to the Netherlands. He was the same weekend in Minnesota (really close to me) with school. We were at the same time at the mall! We were already planning on meeting up this weekend. This was a good time to meet up. I gave him some stuff that he will bring for me to my parents. He will go to the Netherlands in winter break.  It was really nice to see him again! 🙂

Sunday was the last racing day. We had the 1500m and a team sprint. My 1500 meters went really good. The wind was blowing hard and I came really close to my personal best of a few years ago. Others skated like 10 seconds above their personal best. So I think I will do the 1500 meters on time trials soon. So I can set a new personal best. With the team sprint we had a team with 3 persons. Everyone is starting off and after 1 lap the first one stops and the second one (which was me) takes the lead and the 3rd lap the last person finishes. I made a little gap with the 3rd person and I found that out a little late. But we still did a good job. After that I took my camera again. Ethan had it to take pictures of my races and now I could start taking pictures again. I stayed on the ice for taking pictures. I think I have some pretty good ones. 🙂 I also made pictures of the rink from the ice.

After we were done and got all our stuff we left to Hayward, where the lake house of my hostfamily is. It is really pretty there. We didn’t stay there long.. We walked on the lake which was all frozen and we went out to eat pizza (BBQ chicken). In the evening we watched the movie ‘Elf’. I didn’t see it before, or I just don’t remember I saw it before, but it is a popular Christmas movie here. People where staring at me with open mouth when I said I didn’t see it before haha. So now I saw it! 🙂 The next morning Hannah and I made homework and we walked on the lake again. We left that day to go back to home. In the car we made some homework too. We didn’t have practice that day.

We did ‘pakjesavond’ on Tuesday. This is an evening where Sinterklaas brings presents. Sinterklaas did send the presents by mail and we had now time to open it. Luke and Noah came over too. Leah wasn’t able to come and Tessa is still in California (she will come home with Christmas. So then I can finally meet her! :)). Everyone was happy with the presents! I got the chocolate letter A, a disc with sinterklaas music, the book ‘The fault in our stars’, mix to make ‘kruitnoten’ and ‘amandelspijs’. It was a  really nice evening. The dogs got a present too.

Sinterklaas

The next day (December 10th) was not fun for a couple of reasons. The first one is that my uncle past away exactly a year ago. So it is a sad memory on that day. Second I twisted my thumb during track practice. I still feel it and I hope it will get better soon. Then there is one more reason. One of the dogs of the hostfamily got killed by a coyote that night. My hostmom told it to me when she picked me up from school. I couldn’t image that it was true. When we came home it was really quiet.. (the dog always barked). So now it is quiet in house when we come home. I’m happy Tiara had an awesome last night (with her own Sinterklaas present). It is only really sad that it happened. I probably took one of her last pictures that night.. We will miss her.

We will miss you Tiara!

Right now I’m in a hotel room in St. Louis with my hostmom. I paused writing the blog. We left this morning (Saturday December 13th) to St. Louis to see the place and to do the Hot Chocolate run (and get an awesome jacket).  After we arrived Becky and I walked  into St. Louis to pick up our goodiebag for tomorrow. After that we went to the City Museum. We knew there would be some playing areas. But later we found out it is a big playing area. Not really a museum. So we walked around and went of some slides. After we left there we went to the hotel. And there I started writing my blog further. So now I’m up to date. We can see the Arch from our hotel room. So that is pretty cool. 🙂

Tomorrow we will run the Hot Chocolate run and we will go into the Arch. I will tell about that in my next update. I hope that will be soon. I have winter break soon. So I will have some time I think. 🙂

Have a nice day everyone and Hi from St. Louis!! 🙂
